Solutions

Arguments about deposits are almost always arguments about what was agreed and when. Keeping both payments in the thread they were agreed in puts the amounts and the dates beyond dispute, and leaves only the part that genuinely needs judgement. Giving back part of it works the same way, in the open, where the difference is obvious.
